A local business content calendar should not look like a corporate campaign deck. It should answer one question:
What useful thing can we publish this week with the material we already have?
If the calendar creates more work than it removes, it will die by the second Monday.
The good news: you do not need to post a lot. You need to post on a steady rhythm. A predictable schedule of a few posts a week tends to beat sporadic bursts, and the data backs the "regular beats heavy" idea โ two strong posts a week will usually out-earn twenty mediocre ones. The U.S. Small Business Administration makes the same point in plainer terms: the best way to stay on schedule and on budget is to make a marketing plan, reviewed at least once a year. A content calendar is that plan, shrunk to a single page.
Use a four-post weekly rhythm
Start with four simple slots:
- Trust: review, testimonial, before-and-after, proof.
- Help: customer question, tip, how-to, mistake to avoid.
- Activity: behind the scenes, staff, event, new photo.
- Offer: promotion, booking reminder, seasonal service, limited slot.
That is enough. You do not need a different idea every day. Three to five posts a week on your main channel is the commonly recommended range for a business, and four sits right in the middle. Pick the floor you can hold every single week, even on your busiest one. Consistency is the asset; volume is optional.
Build from real inputs
Every Friday, collect:
- New reviews.
- Common customer questions.
- Photos from the week.
- Upcoming schedule changes.
- Services you want to sell more of.
- Comments or DMs that need a public answer.
Then map those inputs to the four slots. You are not inventing content โ you are noticing what already happened and pointing a camera at it.
The 15-minute Friday planning ritual
You do not need a planning meeting. You need fifteen minutes and a timer. Run it the same way every Friday so it becomes a habit, not a decision.
- Minutes 0โ3 โ Gather. Open your reviews, your photo roll, and your inbox. Screenshot or save anything worth sharing.
- Minutes 3โ8 โ Sort. Drop each item into one of the four slots: Trust, Help, Activity, Offer. If a slot is empty, that is your signal โ not a failure.
- Minutes 8โ13 โ Draft. Write the next week's four posts in rough form. One or two sentences each. Done beats clever.
- Minutes 13โ15 โ Schedule. Pick the day and the first channel for each. Hit save.
