Brand monitoring is the listening half. Reputation management is the acting half. At full scope, monitoring means watching every surface where your business name can turn up — the reviews customers leave, the listings that describe you, social mentions, forums, news coverage and the rest of the open web — for what is being said and what changed. Management is replying, correcting, publishing, and changing how the business actually runs. The difference is a verb, not a vendor.
One thing to clear up first, because the term gets used two ways. In the wide sense, "reputation management" is the whole parent discipline — finding, shaping and answering, monitoring included. That is the sense someone means when they sell you reputation management as a service, and the sense this site uses elsewhere. In the narrow sense, it is only the acting half. This post uses the narrow sense whenever it sets the two side by side, because that is the sense in which they are two distinct jobs rather than one job and its parent.
Neither half works on its own. Monitoring with nothing after it is a list nobody acted on. Management with nothing before it is guesswork.
The same Tuesday, twice
It is 8:40 on a Tuesday morning. The first version of that five minutes is monitoring.
She opens her own Google Business Profile the way a customer sees it. She reads the two reviews that landed overnight — one five-star, one three-star about the wait. She opens the Edit profile section and checks whether Google has flagged an update to her information. She looks at the hours line, and notices the holiday Monday still shows as open. She writes nothing. She publishes nothing. She fixes nothing. The output is a short list of things she now knows.
Now the second version. Same Tuesday, 8:40, same five minutes — except this time she acts.
Same list. She replies to the three-star. She corrects the holiday hours. She posts one photo of Saturday's work. The output is three things that are now different on the internet.
Same clock, same coffee, same five minutes. The difference is whether anything moved.
That is also the smallest honest version of each — a slice of the full scope, not the whole of it. Monitoring, cut down: one profile, one moment, one weekday — the new reviews, the alerts in the Edit profile section, and one Google Alert on your business name, which is the only part of the routine that reaches past those two surfaces. Management, cut down: reply to what arrived, fix one wrong fact, publish one true thing. Both fit inside the same five minutes, which is exactly why they get confused for each other. Forums, news coverage and social mentions are still out there, and the five minutes does not cover them.
